Erin - SERC Barefoot mileage winner

Erin belongs to one of our Barefootworks trimmers, Dawn. She's an eight year old Irish Draft X mare.

As an endurance rider, Dawn was resistant to barefoot for many years. In July 2005 Erin came up with a sudden lameness halfway through a competition ride, and was diagnosed with a fractured pedal bone (very marginal on x-ray). After three months wearing the same heart bar shoe on the right fore and an unclear prognosis of when the fracture might be healed, Dawn started to look for other solutions and rang Anni.

Erin's main problems were, apart from the shoeing, the length of her toes, and height of her heels. She also had very deep collateral grooves, which were infected and hadn't been treated, and at that time, poor frog condition. Her back feet had been left bare since her injury, and had much better health already.

Erin’s right fore was initially shod to stabilise the suspected fractured pedal bone. With her shoes removed, infection treated and regular 4-5 weekly trims, we soon saw improvements in sole depth and quality, hoof wall and frog.

We saw some big changes in Erin - in the width of her coronary band.

And her feet are just a little bit smaller now, so her dishing has gone.

These two pics were taken one year apart at the same point of the same ride. Note the difference in straightness and attitude as Erin trots down the downhill slope.

In 2007, Erin and Dawn won the SERC Grampian Barefoot Mileage Trophy. Well done guys!
